Can we teach ‘understanding’?
We want our students to ‘understand’ mathematics, but what do we really mean by that? And can we teach understanding of mathematics, or do we just have to hope that it will somehow emerge? In this keynote, I will raise some questions about ‘teaching for understanding’ and share some tasks that we can try together that might inform our thinking on this.
